Judge Betty Roberts As the first female Oregon Supreme Court Justice (from 1982 to 1986), Judge Betty Roberts helped pave the way for other women in Oregon politics. Roberts was also elected to the Oregon House in 1964 and the Senate in 1968 (at the time the only woman in that body), and served on the Court of Appeals from 1977 to 1982. While in the Senate, Roberts was a cosponsor of the Oregon Bottle Bill – the first container-deposit legislation in the nation. In 1975, she was named the Education Citizen of the Year Award by the Oregon Education Association and the Woman of the Year by the Oregon Women’s Political Caucus. She has been a visiting professor in political science at Oregon State University and served on the state's Commission on Higher Education. In 1992, Roberts was given the award bearing her name from the Oregon Women Lawyers. She earned the E. B. MacNaughton Civil Liberties Award from the ACLU in 2004. In 2006, the American Bar Association awarded her the Margaret Brent Award from its Commission on Women in the Profession.
